Natural lava rock for biological filtration
EHEIM LAV consists of lava rock and is a pure natural product. The rough, highly porous structure offers the cleansing bacteria very good settlement conditions. As it is a natural material, the granules or fragments in the packaging are of different sizes.
EHEIM LAV can be washed out and reused. It is suitable for fresh and sea water.
Biological filter media
The main task of the biological filter material is to provide the best conditions for bacteria cultures to settle, so that a bacterial lawn is created after a short time. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert the substances critical for the aquarium. After the first cleaning by mechanical filter masses (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro) the biological filtration is the most important thing. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water values. Therefore we have invested a lot of research work in the development of biological filter media.
Tip:
Never clean or replace all biological filter material in one operation (and never too thoroughly). The bacterial cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise the new colonisation will be delayed. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in the internal filters aquaball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.
